1 · How a student moves from one app to the next
1Placement testFails step down a grade until a pass; passes step up a grade until a fail.
→
2Course in that grade's appe.g. Zearn, MobyMax. 2+ courses in a grade are done in order.
→
3Course reaches 100%Reported by the app or calculated by TimeBack. Partial progress never moves the student.
→
4End-of-course testAlphaTest (also called MasteryTrack). Reading PK-2: AlphaLiteracy battery.
→
5Pass?Score ≥ 89.5%. FastMath and Reading PK-2 use the test's pass/fail instead.
Pass → next grade's first courseThis is where students switch apps, e.g. Math G2 Zearn → G3 AlphaMath (section 2). Exceptions below go straight to the next test.
Fail → hole-filling, then the same testBuilt from the test's gap analysis in the grade's HF app (dashed chips). FastMath and Reading PK-2 use fixed HF courses. No-HF cases below.
Placement resultJudged at the boundary grade (one above the highest pass, or the lowest grade tested if none passed). Below 59.5% → that grade's course. 59.5–89.5% → hole-filling, then the placement test again. Math, FastMath, Reading PK-2, Social Studies: a fail always gets the course. Language G9-12: always hole-filling. Science G10-11 at 59.5–89.5%: no HF exists, nothing is assigned.
Where placement starts
- MAP grade − 1 when set from the placement page; otherwise K, or G3 if age-grade G6+.
- Science: G3 when opened by the unlock (placement page: Science MAP − 1, min G3).
- Writing: Language's start (G3–G8).
- Vocabulary: Reading's start (min G3) when it unlocks automatically; from the placement page, G3.
- FastMath: opens when the student's first Math placement result arrives, at that test's grade (max G5), starting with Addition; every operation's test before the next grade. At schools without Math it is not assigned automatically.
- Social Studies: the diagnostic picks G3-8; no step down.
New subjects unlock (automatic)
| Math, Reading, Language | open day one, if the school's subject list includes them |
| Vocabulary | master Reading G2* |
| Writing | master Language G3 |
| Science | master Math, Reading*, Language G2 + a FastMath grade |
| Social Studies | master Reading G2* (automatic placement: pilot list only, ~12 students) |
- Science, Vocab, Writing: age-grade G2+
- *Reading G2 = passing the G2 AlphaLiteracy battery (includes the fluency check), or any Reading G3+ pass; summer-group students skip the fluency check
- Placement page: uses its own similar checks for Vocabulary, Writing and Science (Science still needs a FastMath grade); Social Studies shows there as locked until Reading G2 is mastered, and opens only after its diagnostic
- Some schools run only some subjects (e.g. only Math, or only Reading/Language/FastMath)
Exceptions
- FastMath: one test per operation; HF only for the failed operation
- Science G6-8 share 5 courses; passing G6/G7 → next grade's test
- Language G8-11: Edmentum English on hold, so a pass goes straight to the next grade's test (G12 pass completes Language); G9-12 fail → Freckle
- Fail with no HF: Math Pre-K (nothing), FastMath Pre-K and Science G10-11 (redo the course), Scroll (nothing automatic)
- Edmentum counts as done at 100% + final grade ≥ 60%, academic enrollments only (Social Studies G9-12: then next course, no test); NCAA/enrichment Edmentum enrollments never advance automatically
- Social Studies (pilot): a diagnostic assigns an AlphaTest placement test (G3-8) or enrolls the G3 Scroll course; finishing a Scroll course does not assign its test
- Math G12: no test; finishing the course completes Math
Known issues right now
- Reading PK-2: a failed retake currently gets the next test right away, before the student does the new AlphaPhonics practice round
- Math: passing the G11 placement test (the highest) currently assigns nothing; G12 Precalculus is enrolled manually
- Language K-2: Lalilo is being retired and its hole-filling is failing, so many students are stuck
